“Are you really a general?”
I smiled.
“A four-star general.”
His eyes widened.
“Like the ones in movies?”
I laughed softly.
“Sometimes.”
He looked out the window for a moment.
Then he asked the question that broke my heart.
“Why didn’t you tell anybody?”
I tightened my grip on the steering wheel.
“Because I wanted people to like me for who I am.”
Eli thought about that.
