off.
Waited.
Tried again.
The same horrible sound.
I unplugged it and stood there with my hand resting on the switch.
Sophie looked at me.
“Is it broken?”
“I don’t know.”
“Grandma’s mixer?”
That question pushed me over the edge.
I walked across the lawn and knocked on Denise’s door.
I wasn’t even furious yet.
Mostly, I expected her to be embarrassed.
I assumed that was why she had left the mixer outside instead of returning it personally.
Denise opened the door holding coffee.
“Oh. Yeah.”
No apology.
No concern.
