The ballroom fell completely silent.

Even the musicians stopped playing.

Governor Daniel Hayes knelt in front of Emma as though the hundreds of guests around him no longer existed.

My daughter blinked up at him.

“You know me?” she asked.

The governor smiled.

“I’ve wanted to meet you for a very long time.”

I stared, completely confused.

My father looked equally stunned.

Vanessa’s mouth hung open.

Grant Wallace suddenly appeared much less confident.

Emma tightened her grip on my hand.

“Have we met before?”

“No,” Governor Hayes said gently. “But I knew your grandfather.”
