The Infidelity Clause

For the first time that morning, I smiled back.

Richard noticed.

His confidence faltered for a fraction of a second.

Then he recovered.

“Article Twelve?” he said with a dismissive laugh. “Miriam, surely we’re not wasting the court’s time.”

My attorney opened a thick leather binder.

“We’re doing the opposite, Mr. Vale.”

The judge adjusted his glasses.

“Proceed.”

Miriam slid a document across the bench.

“Article Twelve of the prenuptial agreement contains an infidelity provision negotiated by the late Charles Vale, the defendant’s grandfather and founder of Vale Capital.”

The courtroom grew quieter.

Even Richard’s attorneys began flipping through their copies.

I watched confusion spread across their faces.

Richard leaned forward.

“What are they talking about?”
