The ballroom fell completely silent.
Governor Daniel Hayes knelt in front of Emma as though the hundreds of guests around him no longer existed.
My daughter stared up at him with wide eyes.
“You know me?” she asked.
The governor smiled.
“I know all about you.”
The room seemed to stop breathing.
My father looked confused.
My mother looked alarmed.
My sister looked furious.
Emma glanced at me.
“Mommy?”
I was just as shocked as everyone else.
Governor Hayes stood and extended his hand toward me.
“Claire.”
