Caleb shook his head.
“Don’t.”
“Why not?”
“Because then you wouldn’t look like you.”
For a second I couldn’t speak.
Then I laughed.
And cried.
And laughed again.
Outside, the spring air felt cool and fresh.
The stars shone above the parking lot.
My mother waited beside her old car.
When she saw me smiling, she looked relieved.
Caleb walked me to the vehicle.
Before I climbed in, he handed me something.
A folded piece of paper.
“What’s this?”
