One of the officers smiled.
“We came because we finally closed the investigation today.”
I looked between them.
“If he didn’t do anything wrong, why are you here?”
The officer reached into his jacket.
Then he pulled out a plaque.
A real plaque.
Gold lettering.
Mounted on polished wood.
“We’re here because the city council asked us to present this.”
Nobody said a word.
The officer cleared his throat.
“Caleb Thompson is being recognized for community service and charitable contributions benefiting over seventy-two families during the last year.”
A gasp spread through the gym.
Seventy-two families.
I looked at Caleb.
