The little girl’s face fell.
“But sometimes,” he continued, “they make one mistake.”
“What kind of mistake?”
Arthur glanced at Lena.
Then at the elevator doors.
Then back at Maya.
“The mistake of believing nobody will fight back.”
The doors opened.
Mother and daughter stepped inside.
For the first time in a very long time, neither looked afraid.
And as the elevator descended, Arthur returned to his office knowing something simple but important:
The thieves hadn’t lost because they were unlucky.
They lost because they underestimated the person they thought they had broken.
And that is often the most expensive mistake of all.
